Dayton Daily News CD Review
BY RAY MARCANO
09/25/2003
Bernie Williams, New York Yankee centerfielder, has a sweet
swing. Smooth. Fluid. Graceful. His debut album, The Journey
Within, has many of the same qualities.
The blend of jazz, blues and salsa -- music of his native Puerto
Rico -- results in creative compositions that probably fit best
in the smooth-jazz corner. But the complexity of some of the
pieces means the record is really much more.
Williams, a classically trained guitarist, wrote most of the
14 songs. He plays his guitar so sweetly in Para Don Berna
that it's easy to imagine someone singing the melody. And he
shows his versatility with the funky and hip-moving, Standing
on the Bridge.
He includes a couple of covers with And So It Goes
and Dust in the Wind. They're nice but distract from
his style and originality, which he brings home with the record's
final cut. On The Williams Kids, his children sing
to one of his pieces. They sing off key, but it's awfully cute.
Many athletes wonder what they'll do when they're done playing.
Williams will simply play on a different field.
